Shakespearovské téma mladých milenců s romantickou láskou až za hrob vzdorující celému světu je natolik atraktivní a nadčasové, že muselo zasáhnout i bravurního filmového vypravěče Quentina Tarantina.
Když Steven Spielberg debutoval dobrodružnou road movie s kriminální zápletkou Sugarlandský expres, bylo budoucímu hitmakerovi 28 let (a Tarantinovi 11 let). Ve snímku podle skutečných událostí výborná Goldie Hawn září v roli přímočaré a rozhodné ženy, která pomůže svému manželovi utéct z vězení, aby si společně vzali zpět synka odebraného sociálkou, což k nim napne pozornost desítek policistů.
Tarantino sám rozvinul téma milenců na zběsilém útěku cca 20 let poté ve vlastním scénáři k filmu Pravdivá romance, který ještě coby neznámý tvůrce prodal studiu, kde jej režíroval mistr akčních spektáklů Tony Scott. Přidal k tomu všehoschopné gangstery, drogy a vyšperkované jadrné dialogy s notnou dávkou černého humoru. Ale podobně jako ve Spielbergově Sugarlandském expresu je i zde základem láska, která dává ústřední dvojici křídla.

The Shakespearean theme of young lovers and love beyond the grave defying the whole world is so attractive and timeless that it inevitably struck a chord also with Quentin Tarantino.
When Steven Spielberg debuted with the adventure road movie, The Sugarland Express, he was 28 years old (and Tarantino was 11 years old). Based on a true story and starring the excellent Goldie Hawn as a woman who springs her husband from jail to get their baby back and ends up in a chase across the US with a bevy of cops at her back.
Tarantino himself developed the theme of lovers on the run almost 20 years later in True Romance, one of his two screenplays which he sold to be shot by another director, in this case the action film maestro Tony Scott. He added all-powerful gangsters, drugs and dialogues full of style a good dose of black humour. But, as in Spielberg's The Sugarland Express, it is true love which helps the central duo to rise above all ods.
